Casa Lume

A climate-conscious residence shaped by shade, concrete, and a quiet courtyard.

Palm Springs, California

Casa Lume — principal view

Casa Lume turns hard desert light into a sequence of cool, sheltered rooms. Deep reveals, pale concrete, and a planted courtyard keep the house calm and efficient through every season.

Construction stays honest and tactile, balancing passive cooling with a precise, long-life material palette.

Working with desert light

Casa Lume begins with the contrast between the brightness of the desert and the quiet of a sheltered interior. The design treats shade as part of the architecture, giving the rooms a sense of depth and protection. Deep reveals make the thickness of the building visible and create a transition between exposed surfaces and the spaces within.

The courtyard as a point of reference

The planted courtyard provides a focus for the house’s relationship with the outdoors. It brings landscape into the experience of the rooms while maintaining the intimate character of a residence. Rather than relying only on distant views, the project gives attention to a closer scale: planting, shadow, and the changing quality of light across a wall.

This balance between enclosure and connection gives the house its calm character. The courtyard is a way to think about outdoor living through shelter and proportion, with the surrounding architecture framing an everyday encounter with the climate.

A restrained material language

Pale concrete supports the project’s emphasis on mass, texture, and light. A limited palette allows small differences in surface and shadow to become more noticeable. The architecture’s expression comes from the relationship between these elements, giving weight to careful construction and the meeting of materials.

Casa Lume’s long-view approach connects material longevity with climate-conscious thinking. For a future residential brief, its central lesson is to consider comfort and atmosphere together from the beginning: where shade is needed, how rooms relate to outdoor space, and which materials will remain meaningful through years of use.
